  • Different Reasons For Hair Loss 101

Different Reasons For Hair Loss 101
Men and Women, Boys and Girls — Relaxed or Natural

    Hair Growth

The normal cycle of hair goes through a phase of growth and rest/stop. Each individual hair survives for an average of three and a half years. The growth phase of hair generally lasts two to three years, during which time it grows about half an inch a month. This growing phase is called ANEGEN. This is followed by a resting phase called TELOGEN, which lasts for about three to four months. Usually in its fourth year the hair falls out and is replaced within 6 months by a new one.

    HAIR LOSS

Hair loss occurs when hair follicles stop producing hair growth – it is called alopecia.

Hair loss is a normal part of aging. Generally about 100 hairs are lost from your head every day. You may not notice this loss because the average scalp contains about 100,000 hairs. Some people may however experience excessive hair loss do to different reasons like stress, after having kids, depression but let’s focus on medication.

    TYPES OF HAIR LOSS

It is well known that many cancer chemotherapy medications cause baldness. Most people are willing to put up with hair loss when accepting treatments for life-threatening diseases. But a large number of popular medications can cause hair loss while neither pharmaceutical industry nor your doctor will tell you about this side effect, SO YOU MUST ASK AND OR DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH.

**Here is a list of drugs that are known to cause hair loss to some people and “can even cause thinning and change the hair type” when used long term:

    Cholesterol-lowering drugs:

    clofibrate (Atromis-S) and gemfibrozil (Lopid)

    Parkinson Medications:

    levodopa (Dopar, Larodopa)

    Ulcer drugs:

cimetidine (Tagamet), ranitidine (Zantac) and famotidine (Pepcid)

    Anticoagulents:

    Coumarin and Heparin

    Agents for gout:

    Allopurinol (Loporin, Zyloprim)

    Antiarthritics:

penicillamine, auranofin (Ridaura), indomethacin (i\Indocin), naproxen (Naprosyn), sulindac (Clinoril), and methotrexate (Folex)

    Drugs derived from vitamin-A:

    isotretinoin (Accutane) and etretinate (Tegison)

    Anticonvulsants for epilepsy:

    trimethadione (Tridione)

    Antidepressants:

    tricyclics, amphetamines

Beta blocker drugs for high blood pressure:

atenolol (Tenormin), metoprolol (Lopressor), nadolol (Corgard), propranolol (Inderal) and timolol (Blocadren)

    Antithyroid agents:

    carbimazole, Iodine, thiocyanate, thiouracil

    Others:

Blood thinners, male hormones (anabolic steroids)

Next time your doctor prescribes any drug for you, ask if it will cause hair loss or if it will have some kind of effect on your natural strands. Your doctor may not realize this side effect. You can ask him or her to look it up in the Physician’s Reference book, which lists the side effects of all prescription medications. If the drug is linked to reversible alopecia, ask if another can be substituted. And just to make sure your physician has given you accurate information, when you get the prescription filled, ask your pharmacist as well. ( Your local Pharmacist knows more about medications then your Dr. believe me. So to sums this all up I have family and friends that has gone through or going through bad hair loss do to meds so no matter what product you use on your hair relaxed or natural, if you are on certain meds that can have a thinning or lossing of hair effect, hey it is what it is no product will work. DO YOUR RESEARCH!!

  • Rinse Out Conditoners VS Leave In Conditioners

Rinse Out Conditoners VS Leave In Conditioners

Leave in conditioners and why they are so important.

Hair conditioners/leave in conditioners is a common household item, and we often take it for granted. But what is the true reasons for using a conditioner, and how does it work? The scientific and chemical processes behind this beauty product are more interesting and complex than most people would guess.

    How Conditioners work:

    Function and Purpose

Hair conditioners are used to perform many functions. It can be used to keep hair from tangling, give it shine, prevent static cling, soften and build body, though basic moisturizing and softening is the most common usage.
Conditioners may also be specially designed to counter the effects of conditions such as dandruff or to help preserve moisture and treat damaged hair. Many conditioners are also designed for people who want to treat specific problems such as more or less moisture, preserving curls or helping hair to be stronger.

Leave in conditioners VS Rinse Out Conditioners

There are many different types of conditioners. Nowadays, the two most common types are rinse-outs and leave-in conditioners, named for how they are used. Rinse-out conditioners have a higher viscosity (thickness), whereas most leave-ins are thinner then rinse out conditioners and some don’t appear greasy or heavy. Both types of conditioners contain (among other ingredients) surfactants, but of different types and densities. Both types of conditioners are needed for all hair types for one reason or another straight, curly, natural, thin, thick, damaged, dry, oily. If you don’t have much of a problem with tangled hair you may be able to get away with just using a leave in conditioner and just work it through the hair.

  • Never Can Say Goodbye

Never can say goodbye to those dead ends. Why is it some people hair is as long as 10-24 inches and they never want to trim those ends? I had a friend like that years ago and for some reason she couldn’t figure out why her hair was breaking off in the back, I told her well have you every thought that it could be related to you not getting your ends trimmed! She decided to just ware her hair short and that’s how she wares it to this very day. I can understand for some people a trip to a salon can turn your head after a bad experience but, don’t neglect your hair because of a bad experience with a scissor happy stylist, find another. For those that have long hair and holding on to dead ends because of being afraid of getting them trimmed off, that will be the least of your worries when your hair start shedding and breaking off then you will have no other choice but to cut it all off.

Also for those divas out there that are transitioning and don’t want to do the BC make sure to trim those relaxed ends every two to three months to keep the hair healthy during you’re transitioning process.

  • Protective Styling Letting Your Hair R.I.P

“What is a protective style? Some people might ask”.
A protective style is when your natural hair is in a resting state of some sort. For example; There is no better way to put it R.I.P,even though your hair is r.i.p it is still your job to giving it the TLC it needs. Like washing it, when needed if you are wearing a protective style that will last longer than a few weeks depending on your scalp and hair. Put moisturizers in it when needed. If you have any kind of length to your hair, you should consider doing a protective style of some sort from time to time. It doesn’t matter if it’s your own hair, it doesn’t matter if your hair is short or long, relaxed or natural, textured, colored, straight or curly. Even just putting it up in a bun or a ponytail for a week, for a short period of time is giving your hair the “R.I.P” it needs. This will allow the hair to heal, to grow a little quicker, helps stay moisturized and you can go wrong.

Winter and spring is the perfect time to do a protective style, it’s like putting your hair in hibernation. You can do it in different ways, some woman keep it simple by doing corn rolls or french braids, most women especially black women relaxed and natural love doing protective styles using hair extensions for example; braids, sew-ins, crochet, yarn and much more.
Whatever you choose just make sure that your locs are not being stressed while in the process of being put in it’s “R.I.P”state.

  • Top 10 “DON’T DO’S”

    Top 10 “DON’T DO’S”

1.DON’T risk losing your hair by over styling your hair on a daily basis.
2.DON’T comb your hair from root to end when tangled or while detangling. Start at the ends of the hair, this will prevent breakage and split ends.
3.DON’T avoid giving your hair the moisture it needs. Moisturize when needed.
4.DON’T flat iron your hair on a daily basis or even a weekly basis, this will cause split ends, sever heat damage, shedding, breakage and will dry out the hair.
5.DON’T do protein treatments during the cold winter months, this can cause more shedding. Try using products for dry/damage hair like deep conditioners and a great leave in and do hot oil treatments.
6.DON’T wash your hair in hot water, hot water will cause over drying of the hair and scalp, this will lead to dull looking hair and flaky scalp.
7.DON’T think that because your natural you don’t need to trim your ends, please do at least every 3 to 4 months or maybe every 6 months.
8.DON’T PANIC when you see more hair than normal in your hair comb or brush. “Think” and see how to fix or help your hair issue if any.
9.AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, DON’T let anyone tell you your hair is nappy, tell them it’s natural.
